our story

Moortangi Estate is a family owned and operated, premium boutique wine company. Our family has a great passion for seeking out beautiful wine. We have travelled the world tasting wine, and always enjoy sharing exquisite wine with each other at our family gatherings. Late one night whilst sitting around the dinner table we had the idea that we could turn our love and knowledge of wine toward producing our very own wine, and so the dream of Moortangi was born.

Moortangi Estate was named after our property in Dixons Creek, at the heart of the Yarra Valley. The land was previously a grazing estate called ‘Moortangi’. Research suggests that Moortangi is an indigenous word that roughly translates to ‘shelter’.

In 2005 we produced our first vintage, the Moortangi Estate Heathcote Shiraz Range. That year we sourced the best quality grapes from two very distinct vineyards in the region to create a Shiraz range that reflects the diverse terroir of the Heathcote region, as well as the vintage.

That same year we planted our first vines on our property in the Yarra Valley. By 2009 our vines were flourishing and we anticipated our first vintage. That year, however, bushfires devastated 90% of our property, leaving the majority of our vines destroyed.

Expert opinion was that not only had the canopy of our vines been destroyed but that the roots had been ‘fried’.   Astonishingly, in 2010 we had regrowth on our main planting of Shiraz.  Since our vines were not grafted, this resurrection means that we could replace the burnt infrastructure and train the new canes.  In addition, we have proof of the strength and depth of the root system and now anticipate an exceptional vineyard.

Our love of wine has brought us here, and inspires the carefully crafted wines we produce.
